The city of Arcadia invites travellers drawn to the parallel frontier of Otherworld to journey to this side of the cosmos, beyond all the lands
you’ve ever known and all the limits and
corruptions seeded within them long ago.

Arcadia Prefecture is an open world coated
with too little sugar for the tastes of some.
Thrill seekers write their own stories
here, roaming abroad, competing in a
number of versus and hardcore divisions, and
delving into the lower levels of deadly
Labyrinths and Treasure Raids.

In the deepest fathoms of the Void Nexus
beneath the Prefecture, innumerable
unclassifiable Magic Realms – created solely by independent minds outside our jurisdiction – provide a place for people to buy or build a home.
We’re certain once you’ve gotten a better feel for what these enchanted subworlds are all about,
you’ll find them a marvelous destination.

Some in Otherworld live with a single life,
a choice we each must make in our own way.
Any who savor the timeless
hardcore spirit
had best remember
death means death.

Quests take adventurers on unguided journeys into uncharted domains. In our world, paid
tasks you’ll find from those seeking allies aren’t
all simple requests. If you’re looking for adventure, there’s plenty amiss.

Souls with an eye for horror may find superb challenge and high stakes in the upcoming grand opening of Enn Corp’s patented Terminus.
Descent into infinite
Horror Rifts of randomized layouts and risks drives competitors in this division to seek high rank for seasonal rewards,
and other
exotic treasure of a bizarre bend…

Rank 1 is, in the competitive leagues active, defined as true Rank 1. This is itself highly extraordinary in modern terms, something we hope to prove with our approach soon.

World-unique legendary weapons, held ever by a single wielder, bear a power so historically shunned and now taboo, it is as if their olden predecessors never existed. This would sound
like nonsense until one pauses to think and
recall what legendary weapons used to be centuries ago, when they were single weapons wielded by a single soul in the entire world.

Many monsters dwell among the fog and peril of the far wilderness, and more than a few
mysteries to be unraveled. We’ll have you know we’re dealing with a reappearance of the Fireblood as we speak. These titanic behemoths sail down into our towns and outposts at erratic times, breathing raw fire and sowing ruin.

Thirteen Rift Bosses appear engaged in their own twisted magical war with each other, harrowing citizens and pursuing cryptic ends.
These thirteen evils of the
Rifts and the damned Fireblood are a plague on the Prefecture,
making existence here dreadful for many.

We know those who peruse our archives and show some intrigue in the enigma of the Prefecture will want to know more, and perhaps try their hand at a new kind of adventure.

Now hear this. If you think you know what it is we offer, be certain you’ve taken the time to know all there is to know about our world,
lest one cast judgment under a veil of sight.
A portal to
Twilight Forest will open soon, where we expect to greet new seekers to the Prefecture’s realms, and begin a new chapter.

Chaoscraft is a first-of-its-kind rated M fantasy MMO. With over 30 new classes and a vast unique universe, it spans the competitive genres of Arena, TDM, BR, HC, and PvM. Open world adventures and hardcore journeys delve into real unknowns and novel realms, challenging new intelligent raid bosses and unscripted villains. Of its most prominent allures, its world-unique legendary weapons may only be wielded by a single soul in the world. This, like old school Rank 1 rewards, embraces raw realism in an infinite world of magic and mayhem and a high-stakes atmosphere of rivalry, difficulty, and a bloody breed of anarchy.

Our Studio’s Principles

What you’re about to embark on, if you choose to read this controversy-leaning site, is nothing short of an ultimate deviation from the boring, generic industry meta we’ve all come to know so well. We’re well aware of what the central controversy around Chaoscraft is bound to become. After months of thought, we’ve decided to outline our studio’s principles at the top of the website and present our future vision in this form, given initial backlash we’ve already received and our anticipation of future divided opinions about this odd indie MMO.

As a first and most important remark, we state clearly here this game is currently presented as a futuristic concept. Chaoscraft was devised in 2018 and its concept was finalized in 2023. We do not have gameplay footage because our studio has only been live for a few months and we’re a team of three devs who’ve never made a game before. We’re seeking other devs who share an interest in this project, and ask the MMO world to set aside any biases and judge the merits of Chaoscraft’s core design with an open mind.

So, if you enjoy MMOs, the history of fantasy, and have an eye for the future potentials of indie studios driven by pure passion for art and gaming, read on. As you do so, do not think we’re oblivious to how asking players to read comes across in today’s world, mega-saturated as it is in cheap clickbait, flashy trailers, and market psychology.

You are, in fact, being asked to read about a new MMO.

This future vision of the MMO genre we present as a kind of literary, philosophical, and artistic exposition on what MMOs used to be, what they are now, and what they can become, once players realize what it means to take a leap of faith despite losing faith many years ago.

We’re aware this intro may come across as unusually detailed. There is a very good reason for this. We are an indie game. In other words, an indie ship. Some people have nothing better to do than poke holes in anything and everything. This is a habit of gamers about any and every game. We’ve taken the time to patch these holes up.

We’re setting sail regardless of any bad faith decisions to dismiss without substance. The gaming industry is full of empty bullshit and most people know it. As such, we will not mince words. This means telling you straight up:

This game is not an average game. This means it must be presented in an atypical format, and, because so many have unnuanced kneejerk reactions to anything out of the ordinary, we’ve chosen to address them in the intro, both by stating our studio’s principles and clarifying this vision.

We state our core principles as follows:

Open World

Otherworld spans across many shifting dimensions, hosting classic and novel denizens and monsters in an unscripted, open-ended universe characterized by fluid internal evolution and the stark absence of deus ex machina intervention.

Ranked Versus

Competitive divisions range from traditional Arena, to tactical 5v5 TDM, to experimental BR with randomized maps. Each season, players compete for Rank 1 titles and other rewards on both circuit and class ladders.

Hardcore Challenges

Chaoscraft seeks to take the hardcore genre to the next level. Using the absolutist definition of one life, HC brings intrepid souls into over a dozen unique ruthless challenges: monster-hunting Slayer, classic Questing, 5-man Labyrinths, Dusty Hills, Treasure Raids, and much more, with an unprecedented Ranked Hardcore system.

Personalized Character

We practice a philosophy of infinite character customization. Our dream is to see players able to create virtually any character imaginable across the entire spectrum of genres, aesthetics, styles, and fashion, giving new life to the meaning of individuality. We’re interested in a new system that allows players to make characters of every single race and class on a single account, shifting at will between them and creating custom appearances, interfaces, and builds for each. Each requires no paid boost or artificial time sink to play, with much of the game being playable at login.

1,000 Unique Avatar Types

Our long-term development goal is to give our art team the time and resources to one day create 1,000 unique avatar types. This means characters across all races and classes can select from and personalize many kinds of aesthetic, unrestricted by any conventional concepts of race/class affinity.

Magic Realms

Chaoscraft follows a path beyond a set MMO overworld, both hosting its own overworld and descending into the depths of a highly experimental infinite sandbox engine designed to empower players to create beautifully detailed, nonlinear Magic Realms hosting their own custom denizens and creatures, governments and laws, physics and climates, and aesthetics and textures in a no-limits world.

Five Class Types

Five class types encompass new and old forms of familiar archetypes: warrior, demonic, psychic, rogue, and wizard. Classes tailor custom builds and weapon selections, with no strict limitations on the kinds of weapons each class can wield. Each character has 100 life, creating balanced simplicity, and five main stats: damage, speed, haste, leech, and defense.

Evolving Worlds

Otherworld diverges dramatically from static world models: Using the actual capabilities of modern engines, worlds exist in a state of perpetual flux, growing populations and ecosystems vulnerable to true physical destruction – not pretend doom. Advanced procedural generation allows for some overworlds to morph in terrain and architecture week to week. Living personalities, genuine mortality, and a theme of contrasting evolution and permanence pervade, making realms feel alive and void of systematic structure.

Reimagined Progression

Chaoscraft reshapes progression itself, drawing from centuries-old archetypes and blending them with new energies and directions. Progression exists in the eye of the beholder: Each individual chooses their own path, in a truly nonlinear, unstructured story written by the heart. Gear, wealth, collections, rank, prestige, and real personal homes in player-built Magic Realms all play a part in how progression is measured, weaving PvP, PvM, and HC together, ensuring fights remain fair and skill shines at the forefront.

Map Randomization

In ranked versus and hardcore PvM, a mix of Named Maps and randomized Mystery Maps creates a chaotic and eclectic competitive experience where each day brings new and altered arenas and dimensions, whether among the ranks of PvP or PvM.

Immersive Realism

We aim to be the first MMO to perfect a form of rated M magical realism based in lifelike perception, skillshot combat, blood and gore, environmental spell effects, and, in HC, legit permadeath. This is a no-holds-barred philosophy seeing the universe itself as the ultimate game template. First-person fast-paced combat, precision-based design, and minimal synthetic overlays create a truly cinematic experience shaping powerful impressions and lasting memories without forcing thematic direction or requiring time sinks.

Mounts & Vehicles

Chaoscraft has in the works open world mounts and vehicles, all of which can, in the spirit of immersive realism, be killed or destroyed, setting the stage for epic and comical scenes and encounters involving living mounts and real vehicles both ground and aerial. It’s a shitshow waiting to happen and we’re here for it.

Elite Rewards

For the first time in a long time, we’re going to see a competitive MMO with true Rank 1 rewards – in the literal sense of Rank 1. We aren’t playing semantic games with the term, defining it in ways akin to a participation trophy. Rank 1 in this game means the real deal, further setting the stage for some action-packed high-stakes drama.

Exotic Collectibles

Gear, weapons, pets, devices, mounts and vehicles, and trinkets often exist as exotic pieces very tough to come by and, in some cases, demanding descent into hardcore realms and journeys. Exotics break from the precedent of more or less widely available gear and items, shaping collections into very special, flavorful rares.

Hidden Secrets

A magician’s creed keeps the magic in magic show: Cards remain facedown. No adventure guide. No reliable wiki. This sounds impossible because no one devotes the effort to mix it up on this level. Unannounced alterations, hidden secrets, and a shroud of mystery foster an atmosphere of unknown outer limits, where it becomes impossible to say what one could find at any given time. We know how difficult it can be to encrypt game secrets. To preserve the magic of the game, an MMO with such erratic preplanned updates, a flux state world, endogenous alterations and variations, and random misinformation makes data-mining much tougher.

Intelligent Bosses

Both world and raid bosses adapt to new advancements in engines and AI, attaining an intelligence beyond what’s commonly considered polite. Bosses think, strategize, and adapt to new situations as we would expect them to, shifting fluidly and striking weaknesses. To complicate matters, bosses have totally unknown life pools, unknown spellbooks, and can evolve over time like players.

Unscripted Villains

This rule that villains must all be scripted pushovers is boring and predictable, and due for a revamp. One day, with just a little bit of imagination and willingness to think outside the box, the villains who drive the story will have minds of their own. If this also sounds impossible, well… Keep reading…

Novel Experiments

Chaoscraft is, above all, a grand experiment. This is why it isn’t being published on any major distribution platform. It’s going to be a bit spicier and stranger than the average game, and this means it takes MMO scope and scale to a level of unpredictable chaos and risk anathema to the average studio. Experiment for the sake of experiment, fun for the sake of fun – these are invaluable principles.

No MTX, RMT, or P2W

No MTX, RMT, or P2W

Botters, hackers, and cheaters have totally ruined the MMO world, reducing what was once a beautiful original landscape to a rotten hollow shell half-populated by mindless machines. This era is donezo and there’s a very simple reason for it: Scorched Earth anti-cheat, in development to be the most extreme security system implemented by any developer, not because developers couldn’t, but because none have had the will to take anti-cheat this far. Our single-account policy also ensures multi-boxing becomes a thing of the past, left to an era when devs didn’t really give a damn.

Fair World PvP

For the many who enjoy world PvP, Chaoscraft realms offer a choice of softcore, risk, and hardcore, as well as singles and multi, featuring WPvP for players of all walks and alignments. In hardcore realms, players stake their life and bank, bringing the meaning of permadeath back to its original roots.

Voice Modifiers

With infinite character and class customization, stylized finishers, and a spirit of realism comes the tradition of fantasy voice modifiers. These allow a player to adjust how they sound in-game based on their race and class, just one of the many novel features possible with determined use of technology.

Dark Carnival

A monthly Dark Carnival brings insane clowns and whacky freaks from across Otherworld to enjoy a colorful assortment of games and rides. Patrons collect Dark Carnival Tokens from the Carnival and their adventures, saving up for some of the biggest prizes…

Arena Book

On a player’s Personal Device and Arcadia Casino, an Arena Book offers betting on live rated 1v1 and 5v5 matches. Bettors watch matches as they unfold, winning or losing essence on the outcome. The Arena Book is one of several forms of in-game gambling.

Racing Circuit

As development in 1.0 continues, we plan the release of a Ranked Racing Circuit. Racers buy and mod custom craft, selecting a mode and choosing from softcore and hardcore tracks. Permadeath is not limited to traditional HC, but extends to other challenges like racing and much more.

True Dragons

Dragons in Chaoscraft are also not pushovers. When we say… dragons… we mean it… Ever seen them before? We all know what true dragons are like, what some of them breathe, and what devastation they can wreak on the world. Fire burns. Olden dragons make a cinematic return in Chaoscraft, their story yet to be written.

Chaoscraft Grand Finals

Every Halloween season, the highest-ranked players from around the world convene in fabulous Las Vegas for a massive prize event, hosting the Grand Finals of every ranked ladder: Arena, TDM, BR, the Racing Circuit, and all the Ranked Hardcore. You heard us right. We want to host hardcore LAN events, live!

World Chaos Tournament

On Halloween night, the 10,000 entry World Chaos Tournament submerges the bravest and craziest contenders into a colossal labyrinth-style tournament venue combining several forms of PvP and PvM. As phases continue and flights dwindle, the final two survivors face off on live broadcast in a hardcore duel to the death for a million bucks!

Legendary Odysseys

In the spirit of old fantasy, written long before the first MMO, world-unique legendary weapons return. Obtained from extremely long, arduous, perilous one-life Odysseys spanning at most 400 nights and a series of cryptic mysteries, these powerful weapons are one-of-a-kind like their pre-modern historical predecessors. A single soul wields each, forcing epic confrontations between those few who earn the ability to wield the same weapon and so seek each other’s demise.

A Note about the Website

A Message from the Developers

We want to be fully transparent about the extraordinary and in some ways bizarre nature of this game. We’ve long anticipated criticisms and doubts of varying kinds, given the checkered history of the gaming industry and the limited capability of indie devs to deliver high-quality titles. Let there be no mistake.

Chaoscraft has been in conceptual development for seven years. This is a passion project of pure artistic aspiration, having gamed for over twenty years and knowing all the ins and outs of the industry and its releases. What you see on this website is not a collection of random “buzzwords” meant to promise impossible realities. Every single part of this game’s design is deliberate, thoughtful, and objectively possible within modern engines. All it takes to create a game of this nature is a team and a solid engine.

Obviously, there is much more that goes into development on the frontend and backend. However, on a core technical level, none of what is outlined in this site’s design is impossible by any means. This game was made by a soul who deeply enjoys art and gaming, and knows what can truly be made using today’s technology.

What cannot be lost here is that there is a vast, vast difference between a game that dreams of a never-before-seen experimental future and a game that defaults to standard industry norms. If it seems like this game offers unbelievable or unimaginable futures, it’s because the future dreamt of in this game has never – key word, never been seen before, in gaming history. One can scroll through the range of features and the nature of the world and competitive seasons itself to see this has simply never been done and does not exist in any conventional title. This is why it feels so alien or unreal, because, in a way, it is alien and unreal.

As a brief note on this website’s design, while artistic intent is something we rarely prefer to divulge, it is our intent this site appear as indie and old school as it does. This is not coincidence and we would not choose any other design. It looks and feels the way it does for a reason. We played old school games, when the internet used to look like this. Our intent is to distinguish the game’s and site’s aesthetic from standard modern titles. This website also does not define the game of Chaoscraft itself, which exists in its own engine beyond this site’s scope.

There is valid skepticism in the gaming world about pre-order sales and development feasibility. There have been documented cases of developers who straight up ghost their projects. We can tell you, friends, if you behold what you see before you carefully, you will see this is unlike any other game you’ve ever known. We’ve poured years into this project. We fully intend to realize it to the absolute best of our ability, knowing the practical realities of how small-scale Early Access must be to launch and the time it will take to give the game the life it is envisioned to attain.

To be clear: Early Access can and will only feature a subset of elements outlined here. We are very transparent about what that subset includes and what it may in the future. Nor will 1.0 itself necessarily feature every single motif revealed here. This design philosophy is meant to encompass an extremely broad range of intriguing ideas that can be experimented with over time. This game is a vision like any other game, and like any other game, it takes a long time to realize the outer limits of that vision, even if it’s doable now to launch a small Early Access.

Chaoscraft’s design will ultimately see this entire vision brought to life, provided we can utilize sufficient resources. This is not a game that can be made without community support. If you read this site and wonder whether this game is “real” because it doesn’t have the backing of a major company or a presence on Steam, know the
pre-orders and crowdfunds you see directly fund the actual developer team. If you like this site, and we mean this – if you like what you see, you will only see this game and others like it brought into being if you manifest it yourself.

Sincerely,
Dev Team

Castle of Nightmares is the ultimate social deduction masterpiece. It sets out to be the most elaborate, perplexing SDG in history. Hosting over 300 classes and dozens of factions in 23-member courts, it has in development millions of possible games, over 10,000 unique avatars, Ranked Chaos ladders, custom scrolls, legendary artifacts, hardcore challenges, and an endless array of havoc, deception, mystery, and fun. Our approach sees it evolving into a kind of MMOSDG, a social deduction game with MMO qualities. It is in the works to be the craziest and weirdest mind game of all time.

October 31st 2027

23-Player Court

Castle of Nightmares features 23-player courts, adding 7-8 extra players to the standard social deduction town/court membership. A larger court means greater complexity, chaos, and confusion, fully embracing a game of extreme difficulty.

300 Classes

A vast number of classes have been designed, spanning the rich, colorful history of the genre and its many intersecting archetypes and motifs. This figure is no joke. We fully plan to release over 300 classes, as official development continues.

Dozens of Factions

Many factions of variable alignments are entangled in the castle’s political affairs. Factions each have unique classes, abilities, and objectives, some of them compatible and some in permanent conflict. More on each under the Factions and Classes page.

10,000 Unique Avatars

Castle of Nightmares is designed to feature an extremely expansive spectrum of possible avatars. We use the 10,000 number seriously. This avatar selection is possible because, as a tabletop-like SDG, the game has absolutely no hitbox limitations whatsoever.

Millions of Possible Games

With over 300 classes in 23-member courts, there exist, liker poker and chess, millions of possible games. Chaos and chance intermix. Each game is fully randomized, with court composition fluctuating unpredictably from game to game, creating unlimited possibility.

Ranked Chaos

The first Ranked Chaos mode of its kind, hosting the whole game on the same global ladder and making every rolelist All Any, meaning there is no structured rolelist and a meta is therefore that much harder to set, complicating the ability to solve the game.

Custom Scrolls

Scrolls make a return in Castle of Nightmares. When equipped, they significantly increase the chance to roll a desired class. Three can be equipped at a time. In this way, players can main favorite classes, playing them more often on average and pursuing high class rank.

Legendary Artifacts

Like Chaoscraft, world-unique legendary artifacts can be sought on epic seasonal odysseys, taking seekers across months of chaotic courts and challenging them to complete their chosen quest, lest their soul perish at the season’s end.

Hardcore Challenges

As an ultimate test of skill, will, and resolve, the game offers its own unique hardcore challenges. All challenges are exclusive to Ranked Hardcore, where players risk their life on a gambit to complete a chosen hardcore journey by end of season or die.
